Journey into Amazing CavesAccording to National Geographic, human have left their mark on 83 percent of Earth's surface. Yet there are still so many secrets inside caves waiting to be discovered. It is thought that caves are dark, mysterious, adventurous, threatening, romantic and awesome. They are home to pirates, treasures devils, demons, bats and gnomes. The truth about caves is much more interesting than their role in fiction and legend. They are inhabited by strange and uniquely adapted life, and they abound with geologic treasures. Moreover, caves are a gateway to the past, to the lives of ancient man and extinct animals.

Hazel Barton and Nancy Aulenbach, who share a love for caves and cave exploration, are scientists brought together by their interest in caves. The two extreme women are compelled to push their limits in hostile environments and risk fatal danger for the thrill of discovery. Barton believes study of the ecosystems of caves might provide valuable information on treating diseases in humans, while Aulenbach researches the life cycles of plants and animals that thrive in caves.

Like the oceans and rain forests, caves hold the promise of revealing new materials, medicines and the processes that could radically better our lives. Join Dr. Hazel Barton and Nancy Aulenbach as they travel to unique and forbidding ice caves in Greenland, underwater caves in the jungles of Mexico, terrestrial caves in the Grand Canyon, and spectacular caves in Arizona. You will wriggle through tiny, twisting passages, swim through flooded underground vaults, drop into gleaming blue labyrinths of ice, and enter a world so extreme the microscopic creatures that live there are called extremeophiles. Join them to look for important clues about the Earth's past and microorganisms that survive and inhabit its most extreme environments and search for discoveries that may lead to cures for human disease.
