Virtual Space-Time Fantasy Adventure
At the Atriums near 3D Theater and
Microscopic World, Global Environment Hall
November 7, 2017 – October 31, 2018
When natural history meets hyper reality…..
Imagine that you participated in a world where all the objects and all the people seemed real enough to touch but you knew － somewhere in your mind － that what you were experiencing was both constructed and mediated by technology. You are in virtual reality. The holy grail of the virtual reality engineers is to create an immersive, interactive experience to help people forget they are in a simulated and constructed sensory environment. That is so-called hyperreality, which is seen as a condition in which what is real and what is fiction are seamlessly blended together.
Hyper Reality: Virtual Space-Time Fantasy Adventure curated by Dr. Hsu Tien-yu, an expert on digital technology at the Museum, brings visitors into the bizarre world of prehistoric creatures and the major ecosystems of the world via hyper reality technology, allowing new scientific experiences and opening new possibilities of perception.
Unlike traditional exhibitions of digital experiences and computer-driven interactives, Hyper Reality: Virtual Space-Time Fantasy Adventure creates an incredibly immersive and vivid full-body experience that makes people instantly forget the mechanics and computer codes behind this spectacular apparatus. This exhibition is divided into two zones: Fantasy Zone at the atrium next to our 3D Theater and Adventure Zone at the atrium in front of the Microscopic World. The former includes the sections of ‘Dr. D’s Time Travel Adventure’, ‘The Endless Earth’, ‘The Colorful Age of Dinosaurs’, ‘Augmented Reality Gives Life to Artifacts’ and ‘Prehistoric Human Life’, while the latter includes ‘Tour the World’s Ecosystems’, ‘5D Virtual Dinosaur Park’, and ‘Archaeological Jeep Adventure’. Both zones explicitly employ the use of electronics and digital tools such as augmented reality, projection mapping, virtual reality, embodied interaction, and immersion experience, while making direct references to natural history. From the first life form, blue-green algae, appeared 3.5 billion years ago to the local animal celebrities in the seven major ecosystems of the world, this major exhibition invites visitors to take the time machine for a journey through space and time!
The exhibition curator Dr. Hsu Tien-yu, who took part in the national projects such as “Taiwan e-Learning and Digital Archives Program” and “Digital Cultural Creativity and Digital Education Program”, has involved in digital education industry for nearly 20 years. He always expects himself to create an innovative learning environment for people, in which kids as well as adults are able to learn happily, easily, and endlessly. Serving as a bridge, he designed Hyper Reality: Virtual Space-Time Fantasy Adventure to implement his previous programs, and to prepare for his following project of “Smart Museum Program”.
“New digital technologies have radically changed the way we experience our daily life,” said Hsu at the exhibition opening reception, “Digital technologies did provide a new style exhibition with valuable and engaging element. Aside from featuring the most advanced digital technologies applied in the museum exhibitions, this exhibition focuses on describing the aging Earth and its ecological and evolutionary processes,” he continued, “Our goal, in addition to increasing enjoyment of the exhibition experience for our visitors, is to extend their learning between the virtual and physical spaces, to offer them a cyclical and lifelong learning environment, and, to stimulate them to visit the museum again and again,” Hsu made the conclusion.
