Flicking of the tongue is a method used by reptiles to detect odors, during which they capture molecules in the air to track prey or to detect hormones or the presence of predators. When the tongue is retracted, information is passed from the oral cavity to the brain via the Jacobson’s organ. The photo presents a hundred-pace pit viper (Deinagkistrodon acutus) curled up along a forest road waiting for prey. As the camera approaches, it flicks its tongue to assess the threat. When faced with an unknown, but apparently harmlessobject, it maintains its majestic pose. Even though this is a venomous snake, it is possible to admire its beauty at a safe distance and by not disturbing it. This is holding true when observing most wild animals.
