Trilobite beetles (Platerodrilus sp.) belong to the family Lycidae and order Coleoptera. Males change in form throughout the growth stages, while females retain their larval form throuout their lives. It is called neoteny, a rare development among beetles. This is like Claudia, in the film Interview with the Vampire, who is mature psychologically but remains a child physically. Although trilobite beetles have existed for 47 million years, scientists have only recently understood their taxonomy and reproductive modes. They are as mysterious as the trilobites that went extinct 250 million years ago. It is hoped that trilobite beetles will continue to survive and reproduce generations by generations.
