Introduction
The largest migration on earth takes place every night when large numbers of marine organisms ascend from hundreds of meters to just below the surface. Before dawn, they return to the murky depths. Plankton, larvae, and organisms that feed on these tiny creatures form a feast parade. One summer night, we jumped into the Pacific Ocean in search of rare deepsea organisms and were treated to a scene that reminded us of the story of “Devils Night” from folklore. We photographed a blanket octopus that inhabits the deep ocean. For the first time, this deepsea octopus was witnessed alive in Taiwanese waters. Its ethereal eyes made it appear like a demon in the dark of night. It quickly glided away, leaving us in shock.
