This is the first time I observed mantis-flies. Many people, including myself, mistake mantis-flies for praying mantises due to the triangular head, two large compound eyes, slender prothorax, and specialized forelegs. The life cycle of mantis-flies involves the following stages: egg-larva-pupa-adult, with complete metamorphosis. It exhibits several differences with the praying mantis. The wings of the praying mantis are horizontally attached to the abdomen, while those of the mantis-fly are arched in a ridge shape. On the specialized sickle-shaped forelegs, the mantis’ tibia folds downward while that of the mantis-fly folds upward.
