Different forms and colors of stag beetles (II)
Except for the Antarctic, stag beetles can be found everywhere in the world. There are approximately 1,300 known species. In Taiwan, there are around 60 species. Among these many species are large variations in size, color, shape of the mandible, body shape and thickness. For example, some have a bright metallic sheen. Some have spots. Some mandibles are curved upwards, some are curved downwards. Some mandibles are as long as the body and some are very short. Some have a long horn on the head without well-developed mandibles.
