Chelungpu Fault Preservation Park
Chichi Earthquake, happened in 1:47 AM, September 21th, 1999, is one of the natural disaster with the great casualties in the past one century. After this disaster, the government launched earthquake relevant search. Central Geological Survey, MOEA requested Professor Wen-Shen Chen to host Chelungpu Fault Paleo-earthquake Investigation Program. The research began in November 2002 in Zhushang Township, Nantou County.
During the excavation of the fault trench and the research of paleo-earthquakes, clear rupture on the surface which caused by Chi-chi Earthquake was found. Meanwhile, the clear fold and fault structures shown on the profile of the trench were regarded as the evidence of paleo-earthquakes and the rare geological landscape in the world.
The construction of this park are done by National Museum of Natural Science, making the world class fault trench appear to the public after re-excavation made by the Anthropology Division. Chelungpu Fault Preservation Park officially opens in May 1, 2013, forming a comprehensive geological and biological park with Fonghanggu Bird and Ecology Park and Earthquake Museum of Taiwan nearby.
The three main missions of Chelungpu Fault Preservation Park are:
- The preservation of the profile of Chelungpu Fault.
- The promotion of the popular science knowledge about earthquake, geology, environment and biology.
- The assistance to the relevant domestic or foreign geological research.
