Stag beetles and scarab beetles are relatives

There are more species in the beetle order Coleoptera than in any other order. The Scarabaeoidea superfamily includes more than 10 families and approximately 35,000 species worldwide. Lucanidae, the stag beetle family, is the second largest family. But, it possesses only 1/20 the number of species of the largest family, Scarabaeidae. Commonly known members of Scarabaeidae include rhinoceros beetle, dung beetle and Protaetia orientalis sakaii Kobayashi.

Pictured here are various members of the superfamily Scarabaeoidea, arranged according to size.
