Calcite in shell fossil

Chemical composition: CaCO3

Lattice system: Hexagonal

Place of origin: Okeechobee, Florida, USA

Introduction: Shells are formed from calcite or aragonite (both calcium carbonate). Therefore, interstitial water of rock strata rich in shell fossils becomes oversaturated with calcium carbonate and calcite crystals form in fossil cavities.
