Lithocarpus konishii

  • Scientific Name:Lithocarpus konishii

This member of the family Fagaceae produces relatively large acorns. Its leaves are leathery in nature and somewhat glossy. Its acorns grow slowly and to large size. After flowering, often a year is needed for the acorns to ripen. Fresh flowers and ripe acorns happily meet in the fall. It is reasonable to speculate that early inhabitants of low elevation areas used acorns of this species as food, as they are rich in nutrients. Moreover, in areas of overlap with other trees of the Fagaceae family with smaller acorns, there are traces of harvesting by humans. This is an important endemic and folk species.
