Takydromus septentrionalis

  • Scientific Name:Takydromus septentrionalis
  • English Name:China grass lizard

The China grass lizard, described by Albert Günther in 1864, was just the second grass lizard species to be discovered. It is widely distributed in low-elevation areas of central and southern China. In Taiwan, it is only found in the Matsu Islands. This is a brown grass lizard but the color along its sides can vary. Some individuals are green along the cheeks and sides and some are brown all over. There is also great variation in the distinctiveness of the white lines along the sides of the body. Some individuals have very obvious white lines along the upper and lower edges, while some have no white lines at all. In addition to the great variations in body color and white lines among individuals, an individual can show differences in coloring in different seasons. This grass lizard possesses three pairs of chin shields and one pair of femoral pores. The length of the body from snout to anus can reach eight centimeters, making it one of the largest grass lizard species.
