This lid is calathiform with flat bottom. In the center of the concave surface is a flat, semicircular protrusion with hole. This type of deep calathiform pottery lid was common to the Fantzuyuan Culture. Lid handles were mostly arc shaped (refer to other specimens in the same display: reconstructed pottery lids (1998 Qingshui Zhongshe site)). This specimen was excavated from the 17th layer of the TP5 test pit at about 180 cm below the surface, which is the Fantzuyuan Culture cultural layer.
It is hypothesized that these lids fit over the opening of pottery jars with the calathiform flat bottom face down. The deep calathiform shape was most likely related to the pottery jars with longer necks and open mouths.
