Garnet

Garnet is named for its crystalline form which resembles the grain-like seeds of pomegranate. The crystalline structure is usually of 12 or 24 sides. Garnet measures 6.5-7.5 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness. There is a strong luster and many color variations and it is a popular gemstone. Garnet is a family of six species, based on variations in chemical composition. On display are two specimens. One is rough, uncut almandine associated with schist. The crystalline structure is completely intact. The dark red to almost black crystals emit a brilliant burgundy red color under strong light. The other is faceted, polished spessartine from Nigeria, weighing 32.48 carats.
