Diamond
Diamond is the mineral with the highest known hardness in the natural world. An octahedral rough diamond from South Africa has been chosen for this exhibition. Under a microscope, it is possible to observe the polygonal helical patterns and growth hillocks. The refractive index of diamonds is 2.417, the highest among gemstone minerals. If the cut proportions are correct, total reflection phenomenon is produced with brilliant specks of light, referred to as "fire". Characteristics of the cut and polished diamond of 1.52 carats on display include color H and clarity VS2. The cutting proportions are good, highlighting its brilliance.
