Family Hyaenidae
Crocuta ultima is a large carnivore. It has an expanded zygomatic arch. The lower jar is thick and strong, revealing a strong bite. Hyenas have very characteristic teeth. The premolars are pointed and sharp and the back molars are solid and strong. This not only allows this species to bite into the flesh, but also to snap bones. The hyena has a strong digestive system. It can obtain nutrients even from rotted meat and hard bone fragments. The distribution of this species was in northern and southern China during the Middle and Late Pleistocene. During the Late Pleistocene, glaciation resulted in the lowering of sea levels and migration of this species to Taiwan's Penghu Channel.
