Crocuta ultima fed on the bodies of animals and picked them clean. Thus, it was also known as "the cleaner". It is speculated that due to climate change, Crocuta ultima migrated along with other large animals, such as Palaeoloxodon huaihoensis, Bubalus teihardi, Equus dalianensis, Cervus hortulorum and Elaphurus davidianus. Moreover, this hyena may have sometimes been a ferocious predator that hunted prey and sometimes a scavenger feeding on decaying animal bodies, fulfilling its role as "the cleaner".
