      Subphylum Vertebrata

This brown bear (Ursus arctos) was large in size with a round head and relatively long snout. The neck was short and the limbs were thickset. The teeth were well developed with wide molars. However, premolars had degenerated. The back molars were thick and strong and gave this brown bear extremely good chewing power. It fed on herbivores, and also on fruit. During the Pleistocene, this species of brown bear had a broad distribution including northeastern and northern China. Due to climate changes, a large number of herbivores migrated southward. This species followed its prey, also migrating to Taiwan's Penghu Channel.
