Equus dalianensis

  • Family Name:Equidae

Kingdom Animalia

    Phylum Chordata

      Subphylum Vertebrata

       Class Mammalia

        Order Artiodactyla

          Family Equidae

Horse limb bone and tooth fossils are common among the large numbers of fossils salvaged from the Penghu Channel. This implies that during prehistoric times there were wild horses on Taiwan. From detailed scientific analysis of the molar structure in the lower jawbone (mandible), this species is remarkably similar to Przewalski's horse (Equus ferus przewalskii) of northern China. Based on the limb structure and size, scientists conjecture that it resembles Equus dalianensis even more. Although research is still undergoing and the final systematic classification has not been determined, what is not disputed is that wild horses that once lived in the Taiwan area traveled long distances from northern and northeastern China.
