Penghu 1 is a human fossil jaw (mandible) belonging to Homo cf. erectus that was found on the bottom of the Penghu Channel in the Taiwan Strait. It is Taiwan's oldest human fossil, dating back 450,000 to 190,000 years before present. Before this, the earliest known human fossil from Taiwan was of Zuozhen man (modern human), from about 20,000 years before present. If it is discovered that Homo cf. erectus does possess the characteristics of Homo erectus, this will become part of Taiwan's fossil hominin record and move the time of first human habitation forward by more than 190,000 years to the Middle Pleistocene.
