Formosan striped squirrel
The Formosan striped squirrel is diurnal and petite, weighing 60-80 grams. It is the smallest of the squirrels in Taiwan. Along the back and sides are short tawny hairs. The belly is white. On the back are three distinct vertical black stripes. This squirrel has a long slender tail that is not bushy and, as such, is often mistaken for a rat. It is mainly distributed in the high mountains of Taiwan at 2,000-3,000 meters above sea level and feeds on tender leaves, tender shoots, petals, seeds, and fruits. Highly vigilant and quick, it is not easy to observe. However, populations in forest recreation areas are less afraid of people. During the day, the Formosan striped squirrel looks for food, climbing tree trunks and hanging from branches to gnaw on fruit, appearing lively and cute.
