Formosan hairy-footed flying squirrel

  • Scientific Name:Belomys pearsonii kaleensis
  • Family Name:Family Sciuridae

This flying squirrel is petite, weighing around 200 grams. Its dorsal pelage is light brown and its ventral pelage is white, with tuft of long black hairs near the inner side of each ear. Its distribution is in broad-leaved or coniferous forests at 400-2,000 meters above sea level but it is not commonly seen, as its its populations are small. Moreover, it does not emit an obvious call like that of the Formosan giant flying squirrel or the Taiwan red and white giant flying squirrel, making it less likely to be observed. It likes to eat fruits with high sugar content and young leaves. In addition to being active in trees, it has been observed building nests in crevices along a rock wall. This phemonenon has not been observed in the other two species of flying squirrel.
