Pleistacantha oryx

  • Scientific Name:Pleistacantha oryx
  • English Name:Spider crab
A general with majestic horns

The spider crab belongs to the family Majidae and lives on the sandy and muddy seafloor at depths of less than 200 meters. Its pear-shaped carapace is covered in fine bristles. With its 10 long and slender walking legs and chelipeds, it roams the seabed in search of food.

What is most impressive are its long branching horns, which resemble those of an oryx.
The zoologist who identified and named this species was so impressed by these majestic horns that oryx was included in the species name.
