The very large Westermann’s knobbed star Pentaceraster westermanni
This is currently the largest sea star specimen in this museum’s collection. It can reach 40 cm in diameter. The surface of its body is covered in blunt spines and when alive it is reddish brown This sea star is often harvested by bottom trawlers in the waters off western Taiwan, especially near Hsinchu and Tainan, and around Penghu. It lives on hard seabeds at depths of 10-60 meters.
