Divergence of the common clubtail butterfly began during the Miocene and there are eight subspecies distributed in the Indomalayan realm. Wingspan is 10-12 cm. The forewings are elongated and ash brown. The hindwings are black with seven white spots in and around the discal cell. On the margins are white and yellow markings. The tail extension is club-shaped at the tip and thin above. The larvae feed on Thottea tomentosa in the family Aristolochiaceae.
