Mammut americanum
Order Proboscidea, Family Mammutidae
Pleistocene (100,000 years before present)
Florida, USA
Herbivore
The mastodon dentition is characterized by molars with raised crowns and seven to eight plates, as well as nipple-shaped ridges, for which it is named. (Mastodon means “nipple tooth.”) There is evidence from many places in North America that prehistoric peoples hunted the mastodon. It is speculated that the extinction of the mastodon is related to overhunting by humans.
