Nymphoides coreana (H. Lév.) Hara
Characteristics: The rhizomes are long and slender. Branches are scarred and leaves scaled. Creeping, can extend with new growth. Leaves are broad, ovate round, diameter 2-8 cm; petiole is long and slender. At the nodes, 6-10 flowers are produced, diameter 1-1.2 cm. The flowers are white, with yellow near the center and marginal hairs. Capsular fruit is spherical, approximately 3 cm in length. Seeds are oblong oval, black or brown.
Distribution: Eastern part of Russia, Korean Peninsula, Japan and Taiwan. In Taiwan, it was once found in ponds all over the island and on Lanyu (Orchid Island). But, today, it is very rare.
Current status: Nymphoides coreana (H. Lév.) Hara grows in ponds, irrigation aqueducts and irrigation canals. More than 100 years ago, Taipei had many wetlands. As there was little pollution, Nymphoides coreana (H. Lév.) Hara populations were very large. Following urban development and changes to the environment, it has become very difficult to find this plant in the wild.
Specimen introduction: S. Yano specimen no. 446. Collection site is described as Mt. Keibi, which refers to today's Xianjiyan in Taipei's Jingmei area. Collection date is May 2, 1897. This specimen is referred to in the databases of LE, SAPS and TNM.
