Hydrangea chinensis Maxim.

  • Scientific Name:Hydrangea chinensis Maxim.

Characteristics: Small, upright shrub that is smooth, without hairs. Leaves are obovate to oblong oval to oblong oval lanceolate, 7-15 cm in length, 2.5-5 cm in width, coarsely serrate at margin, acuminate to long attenuate, thin coriaceous. Petiole approximately 1 cm in length, usually dark purplish brown. Corymb with terminal, umbel inflorescence, sterile flowers with 3 round sepals. Both male and female fertile flowers are yellow. Capsular fruit is spherical and olive green.  

Distribution: Western and southern China, Taiwan, the Philippines and the Ryuku Islands. It is found in low to medium elevation areas all around Taiwan and on Lanyu (Orchid Island) and Green Island.  

Specimen introduction: S. Yano specimen no. 266. Collection site is described as Mt. Shabo, which is present-day Shamao Mountain in Taipei's Yangmingshan area. Collection date is March 19, 1897. This specimen number is referred to in the collection databases of LE, SAPS and TNM. From a survey of the original specimen information, it was discovered that the collection site for specimen no. 266 in the SAPS collection is Mount Shabo, and the specimen collection date is March 28, 1897. Fortunately, the collection area is the same, it is just written differently.
