Lysimachia candida Lindel.

  • Scientific Name:Lysimachia candida Lindel.

Characteristics: Annual or biennial upright herbaceous plant, 5-30 cm in height. The entire plant is smooth, without hairs. Leaves are spathulate, obovate or oblanceolate, 2.5-6 cm in length, 5-2 mm in width, apex acuminate to obtuse, base acuminate. Terminal raceme, corolla white, 6-12 mm in length. Capsular fruit is spherical, diameter 2-3 mm. 

Distribution: Myanmar, Vietnam, southwestern China, southern China, eastern China and Taiwan. In Taiwan, it has only been recorded in the Taipei area. 

Properties: This species has not been recorded in the Flora of Taiwan. It was discovered through a collaborative project between Taiwan and Russia initiated by MOST (formerly the National Science Council). In 2012, it was reported as an extinct species in Taiwan and at the same time a newly recorded species in the family Primulaceae.  

Specimen introduction: S. Yano specimen no. 369. Collection site is described as Taipeh, which refers to the present-day Taipei area. Collection date is April 12, 1897. This specimen number appears in the collection databases of LE and TNM. In 2010, some isotype specimens were returned to Taiwan. Following comparisons and identification by Dr. Chen Chih-Hsiung, who is attached to this museum, he and the coordinators of the collaborative project on the Russian side, A. Grabovskaya and I. Illarionova, jointly published their findings in Taiwania.
