Chinese elder
Characteristics: Subshrub-type herbaceous plant or low shrub. It can reach 3 m in height. Branchlet pith is white. Leaves are pinniform and compound, 3-5 leaflets, papyraceous, lanceolate. Lateral leaves without petiole or with short petiole, 7-20 cm in length, 2-5 cm in width, with fine sawtooth edges. Compound umbel, terminal inflorescence. Flowers are white. Some flowers will abnormally develop into upright, cup-shaped, yellow gland bodies. Fruit is spherical, juicy and red.
Distribution: Wide distribution including China, Japan, the Ryukyu Islands and Taiwan. In Taiwan, it is very easy to find all over from low elevation to 2000 meters in open spaces or areas of shrub growth
Properties: This is a folk medicinal plant. As it is widespread, it was most likely quite easy for Yano to collect.
Specimen introduction: S. Yano specimen no. 110. Collection site is described as Taipei, referring to today's Taipei area. Collection date is July 26, 1896. This specimen number can be found in the collection databases of LE and TNM.
