Cordyceps militaris

Also known as northern caterpillar fungus, this species grows wild in Northeast Asia, including in high elevation mountainous areas of Taiwan. It parasitizes larvae of insects of Order Lepidoptera. During pupation of the host, fruiting body grows. This species is easily cultivated and inexpensive. It can serve as a substitute for Ophiocordyceps sinensis.
