嗜菊短頭脊沫蟬若蟲寄主廣泛，以刺吸食植物木質部的汁液為生。牠會分泌泡沫保護自己，一方面隔絕外界的強光和冷熱，另一方面調控正常發育所需的溫濕條件，同時也避免天敵的捕食與寄生。

The spittlebug (Poophilus costalis Walker) nymph has a wide range of host plants. It pierces these plants to suck the xylem sap. It also secretes a foamy substance to protect itself from sunlight, cold and heat, as well as to maintain the humidity needed for normal development. At the same time, this foamy substance prevents it from attacks by predators or parasitoids.
