臺灣大蝗俗稱「草螟公」，雌蟲體長近9公分，為臺灣最大的蝗蟲。腹部具有膜質的聽覺器官，像人類的耳朵一樣，能感知外界的聲音，後足脛節上有刺，可猛力後踢刺向天敵。產卵時，雌蝗會將腹部伸長鑽入泥土中，一次可產下60粒的卵。臺灣大蝗普遍分布於平地至低海拔山區，由於農藥的使用與棲地改變，族群數量已不如從前。

Chondracris rosea is the largest grasshopper in Taiwan, with females measuring nearly nine centimeters in length. Along its abdomen are membranous auditory organs, like ears, that perceive sounds from the outside world. Spines along the tibiae of the hind legs are for defense. The female extends her abdomen and burrows it into the soil, laying 60 eggs at a time. This grasshopper is distributed from the plains to low-elevation mountainous areas. Due to the use of pesticides and changes in its habitat, its population is not as large as it once was.
