1900年德國一家礦業公司為了開採磷礦，在帛琉洛克群島海域挖鑿了一條人工水道，以便利運輸船隻進出，當地人稱之為德國水道。由於地形的關係，洋流在此匯集，帶來了眾多的浮游生物以及魚群聚集在此處。科學家經過觀察研究後發現，在滿月大潮前後，由於洋流更加強烈，浮游生物以及魚群的數量也達到最高峰，此時有機會觀察到眾多的鬼蝠魟（Manta Ray）在水層間來回穿梭，追逐捕食小魚，飽餐一頓。

In 1900, a German mining company created an artificial waterway in Palau’s Rock Islands to facilitate the shipment of phosphate mined in the area; locals refer to it as the German Channel. Due to the terrain and the convergence of sea currents, planktons are abundant here, and so are fish schools. Scientists have observed that during spring tides, currents intensify and plankton and fish populations peak, making it highly likely to see numerous manta rays darting through the water in pursuit of a feast.
