The larva of the moth, Eudocima homaena, has a truly striking appearance. Its back is covered with fine white spots and several large yellow spots, two pairs of which contain black dots, resembling eyes. Near the posterior end, there is a red protrusion on the back, and the raised tail end looks remarkably like a head. These features may confuse predators’ visual judgment and reduce the risk of attack, representing an important evolutionary adaptation in insects. The larva's actual head is hidden at the inconspicuous end. Can you find it? Of interest is a darkling beetle hiding under a twig, which went unnoticed during the photoshoot.
