柳珊瑚科也稱海扇，大多生長在礁岩邊、海峽、或是峭壁上，全株是一個群體，多數種類由許多珊瑚蟲構成，組成扇形、枝狀。扇狀的柳珊瑚喜歡與水流成直角，藉以增加與水流接觸的表面，從而增加捕捉水中食物的機會。由於成形的海扇會樹狀展開，較容易受到漁民拖網捕撈時不慎破壞，所以在淺海的區域保育不易。照片拍攝於印尼，也可看出印尼對人工魚礁保育的觀念相對重視。

Members of the family Gorgoniidae, known as sea fans, are soft corals that mostly grow on reef rocks, in straits, or on cliffs. They form colonies, with most species composed of numerous polyps arranged in a fan- or branched shape. Sea fans tend to grow at right angles to the current to increase the surface area in contact with the current and the chance of capturing food. As sea fans tend to branch out, they are easily damaged by trawlers, making their conservation difficult in shallow waters. This image, taken in Indonesia, reflects the country’s importance of artificial reef-based conservation.
