會自吐泡泡的昆蟲是相當特別有趣的現象，平時不易見其蹤影。照片中的昆蟲是屬於昆蟲綱半翅目的沫蟬若蟲，具有刺吸式口器，以吸收植物汁液為食。沫蟬若蟲有自製泡泡的本能，能將自己隱藏於泡沫之中，以防天敵捕食，且泡沫的味道對部分捕食者具有忌避作用。沫蟬若蟲歷經五次蛻皮後成為成蟲，直到羽化為成蟲才離開泡泡浴。圖為一點鏟頭沫蟬及嗜菊短頭脊沫蟬，是在鱧腸植物上發現的，走在生態豐富的步道或公園可以留意沫蟬的蹤跡。

Insects that produce their own bubbles are rather unique and interesting, but not easily observed. The nymphs of the spittlebug in the photos belong to the order Hemiptera and the class Insecta. Nymphs possess mouthparts specialized for piercing and sucking, used to feed on sap. Spittlebug nymphs instinctively create a foamy substance to hide themselves and avoid predation. The taste of this foam is unpleasant to some predators. Nymphs molt five times before becoming adults. Only after eclosion do they leave their bubble bath. In these images are Clovia puncta and Poophilus costalis, both found on false daisy (Eclipta prostrata). Keep an eye out for spittlebugs when visiting ecologically rich trails or parks.
