I often hear guides describe the larvae of the order Lepidoptera as having suction discs on their abdomen. These are not suction discs, but prolegs that the larvae use to grip surfaces. On the tips of their prolegs are tiny gripping hooks, called crochets. The arrangement of these crochets varies among families. Sometimes, they are arranged in a wheel shape and sometimes in an arch shape. Because they are very tiny, they are difficult to observe with the naked eye, but can be clearly seen when magnified through a lens. Due to their larger size, the proleg structures are easier to see on Saturniidae larvae.
