Environmental adaptation of traditional architecture: This image captures the gassho-zukuri-style houses of Shirakawa-go, Japan. The steep thatched roofs of these houses demonstrate how architecture can be adapted to the natural environment. The steep roof angle allows heavy snow to slide off naturally, preventing the roof from collapsing. Additionally, the thick thatch of the roof provides excellent insulation, keeping the interior warm in winter. These centuries-old dwellings showcase energy-efficient design achieved through passive heating, serving as examples of sustainable architecture that continue to inspire today.
