蝴蝶翅膀上有許多鱗片,能夠幫助飛行、調節體溫、脫落逃生,繽紛斑斕的色彩,主要也由鱗片呈現。鱗片的顏色可分為色素形成的化學色,與表面奈米結構產生數種光學效應的物理色。透過顯微鏡可以看清楚這些微小鱗片的形態和脊紋結構(直條紋路),暗視野照明可一睹鱗片的色素色彩,如圖1:紅紋鳳蝶(左3與右1)、橙帶藍尺蛾(左1與右2)、黃蝶(左2)。圖2為紫斑蝶平行脊紋的側光照明,則可以讓原本黑色的鱗片綻放出迷幻的藍紫光芒。
Butterfly wings are covered in scales, which aid flight, body temperature adjustment, and escape. Moreover, they produce beautiful colors due to pigments and optical effects of the surface nanostructures. The shapes and ridges (straight lines) of the scales can be clearly seen under a microscope, while the pigments can be viewed under dark field illumination.
